The Explosive Detection Canine; Conventional Enhancements, Unconventional and Advanced Capabilities by Mike Herstik

This presentation is designed to share successful methods and techniques that set a strong foundation for detection work, maximizing team abilities for conventional deployments and allowing for development of advanced capabilities, i.e.; post blast and directed standoff searches.

The “Wall” its design, development and effective training protocol will be shown. Methods for creating a reliable conditioned response to the target odors, a strong focused alert and neutrality to distractors, (food, toys, non-target associated scents), will be explained. Ongoing long term enhancement techniques, transition to advanced training scenarios, effective use of the canine for counter terrorism, and actual case studies will be also be discussed.

Mike Herstik is the Owner/Director of International K-9 based in Los Angeles California. He is a consultant/K9 Trainer specializing in explosive detection training for law enforcement, military and qualified entities. He has provided formal training and instruction to the following entities and agencies;

Israeli Oketz, (IDF special forces k9 unit), Israeli National and Border Police, U.S. Military, LAPD Bomb Squad, Los Angeles Airport Police, L.A. County police, L.A.
