Canine Down by Kevin Keitz: October 13, 1997 Kevin was called out from home for reference to a wanted subject who had jumped from a second story window to the alley below and fled into the neighborhood. Upon deployment the suspect was eventually located and immediately, a fire fight ensued. During the fire fight Kevin’s canine Kimbo not only saved his life by his actions, but was shot a number of times.
Sgt. Kevin Keitz – Has been in Law Enforcement for 28 years and a K-9 Handler since 1987. He is currently the K-9 Unit Supervisor and Trainer for the Seminole Police Department, Broward County, Florida. Kevin is retired from the Hollywood Police Department after 25 years of service and served as the K-9 Unit Trainer/Handler and was an active member of the SWAT Team. Kevin is a certified State of Florida K-9 Team Trainer and Evaluator. Kevin has given instruction in a number of K-9 Seminars throughout the united States as well as numerous K-9 Work Dog and Detector Schools in South Florida. In 1997 and 2001 , Kevin was involved in shooting incidents during canine deployments one of which resulted in the loss of one of his canines. Kevin stresses the importance of “Reality Based Training”.
